Location: Philippines – 100% Remote
Engagement Type: Long-term Independent Contractor
Service Days: Monday to Friday
Reports To: Australian Client Manager

About the Role

We are an Australian accounting practice seeking an experienced Senior Australian Public Practice Bookkeeper based in the Philippines to support a portfolio of Australian clients.
This is a hands-on, non-client-facing role. You will work directly with an Australian Client Manager, who will manage all external client communication and provide instructions, priorities and review feedback.

You will be responsible for delivering accurate bookkeeping, payroll, BAS/IAS preparation, reconciliations, month-end work and accounting support across multiple Australian entities.
This opportunity is suitable only for candidates with substantial recent experience working within, or directly supporting, an Australian accounting firm, bookkeeping practice or public practice environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesBookkeeping and Reconciliations
· Manage end-to-end bookkeeping for multiple Australian clients.
· Complete bank, credit card, loan and merchant facility reconciliations.
· Reconcile payment platforms such as Stripe, Square, PayPal, Shopify and Wise.
· Process accounts payable and accounts receivable.
· Process supplier bills, sales invoices, credit notes, refunds and payments.
· Review aged receivables and aged payables.
· Process journals, accruals, prepayments and accounting adjustments.
· Reconcile director, shareholder, beneficiary and intercompany loan accounts.
· Maintain fixed asset registers and assist with depreciation schedules.
· Investigate unreconciled, duplicated, missing or incorrectly recorded transactions.

Account Code and GST Code Review

This is a senior-level role. You must be able to review the quality and technical accuracy of bookkeeping work.

You will be required to:

· Review and correct account codes.
· Review and correct GST tax codes.
· Identify incorrect use of GST on Income, GST on Expenses, GST-Free, Input Taxed and BAS Excluded codes.
· Review the GST treatment of overseas transactions, exports, reimbursements, disbursements, insurance payments and government grants.
· Identify personal, capital, private and non-deductible transactions.
· Review general ledger accounts for unusual balances and incorrect classifications.
· Review suspense, clearing and uncategorised transaction accounts.
· Self-review all work before submitting it to the Client Manager.
· Review work prepared by junior bookkeepers where required.

Australian Payroll

· Process weekly, fortnightly and monthly payroll.
· Set up and maintain employee payroll records.
· Process ordinary hours, overtime, allowances, bonuses, deductions and reimbursements.
· Process annual leave, personal leave and termination payments.
· Prepare Single Touch Payroll reporting and year-end STP finalisation.
· Calculate and reconcile PAYG withholding.
· Calculate and reconcile employer superannuation.
· Review superannuation clearing house payments and identify rejected or unpaid amounts.
· Reconcile payroll reports, payroll journals and payroll liability accounts.
· Assist with payroll tax, workers compensation and other payroll compliance requirements.

BAS, IAS and Compliance Support

· Prepare BAS and IAS workpapers for internal review.
· Reconcile GST, PAYG withholding and PAYG instalment accounts.
· Review GST reporting under both cash and accrual methods.
· Reconcile BAS figures to the general ledger.
· Identify prior-period errors and transactions requiring GST adjustments.
· Assist with PAYG instalment variation calculations.
· Assist with Taxable Payments Annual Reports.
· Prepare supporting documents and schedules for the firm’s accountants and tax agents.
· Monitor internal deadlines and escalate missing information promptly.

Month-End and Year-End

· Complete monthly, quarterly and annual bookkeeping files.
· Reconcile all material balance sheet accounts.
· Review payroll, GST, superannuation and PAYG liabilities.
· Prepare accruals, prepayments and other adjusting journals.
· Review accounts payable and accounts receivable cut-off.
· Reconcile fixed assets, inventory and cost of goods sold where applicable.
· Prepare year-end workpapers and supporting schedules.
· Ensure client files are ready for financial statement and income tax return preparation.

Financial Reporting

· Prepare Profit and Loss Statements and Balance Sheets.
· Prepare cash flow and management reports where required.
· Compare results with prior periods, budgets or forecasts.
· Identify unusual movements, negative balances and potential accounting errors.
· Provide clear internal explanations and supporting schedules to the Client Manager.

Tax Return Experience – Highly Regarded, but not essential

Experience preparing Australian income tax returns or tax workpapers is not essential but will be a strong advantage.

Relevant experience may include:
· Individual and sole trader tax returns.
· Company tax returns.
· Trust tax returns and distribution workpapers.
· Partnership tax returns.
· Rental property schedules.
· Depreciation and capital allowance schedules.
· Tax reconciliation workpapers.
· Xero Tax, MYOB Practice, HandiTax or BGL.

Essential Experience and Skills

Applicants must have:
· At least five years of recent Australian public practice bookkeeping experience.
· Experience managing bookkeeping for multiple Australian clients.
· Advanced practical experience using Xero.
· Strong practical experience using MYOB.
· Strong practical experience using QuickBooks Online.
· Experience preparing BAS and IAS workpapers.
· Strong knowledge of Australian GST and account coding.
· Demonstrated experience reviewing and correcting GST codes.
· Strong Australian payroll, STP and superannuation experience.
· Advanced reconciliation and problem-solving skills.
· Experience preparing month-end and year-end workpapers.
· Excellent written and spoken English.
· Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
· The ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.
· High standards of confidentiality, integrity and professional conduct.
· Ability to use AI tools

Experience limited to internal bookkeeping for one Australian business may not satisfy the public practice experience requirement.

Qualifications

The following qualifications are highly regarded:
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Commerce.
· Diploma or recognised qualification in Accounting or Bookkeeping.
· CPA, Chartered Accountant or equivalent studies.
· Xero Advisor Certification.
· MYOB or QuickBooks certification.

Software

You must be confident using:

· Xero
· MYOB
· QuickBooks Online

Independent Contractor Arrangement

This is an independent contractor opportunity and not an employee position.

The contractor will:

· Provide services remotely from the Philippines.
· Provide their own computer, secure workspace, internet and backup power arrangements.
· Be responsible for their own business registration, taxation, invoicing and insurance obligations.
· Issue a valid monthly contractor invoice.

The contractor will ordinarily provide services Monday to Friday and maintain regular overlap with Australian business hours.

The parties will agree on a daily core collaboration window for meetings, questions and internal communication. Outside that window, the contractor may arrange their own working schedule, provided all deadlines and service requirements are met.

Timesheets and Work Records

The contractor must complete a daily timesheet recording:

· Date.
· Client or entity.
· Task performed.
· Time spent.
· Work completed.
· Outstanding issues and next steps.

Timesheets are used for client costing, workflow management, capacity planning and supporting the contractor’s invoice. They are not intended to operate as employee attendance records.
