The firm is experiencing explosive growth. To maintain their high standards of client service, they are seeking a foundational Lead U.S. Tax Manager to come in, take a substantial workload off the firm's owner, and officially build, lead, and scale the tax division.

Role Overview

This is not a standard "data entry" tax preparation role. This position is designed for a seasoned public practice veteran who is ready to step into broader strategic responsibilities. You will act as the firm's Tax Department Head.

In the immediate term, you will roll up your sleeves to prepare and review complex returns heavily utilizing Drake Tax to clear the current pipeline. Long-term, you will be responsible for building standard operating procedures (SOPs), optimizing the firm's tax tech stack, providing high-level tax planning advisory directly to U.S. business owners, and eventually hiring and mentoring a team of junior tax accountants under your leadership.

Core Responsibilities

1. Department Leadership & Strategic Growth

Build the Infrastructure: Document and standardize tax workflows, review gates, and checklists to ensure the firm's tax seasons are highly efficient and scalable.
Process Optimization: Identify bottlenecks, implement automations between accounting and tax tools, and contribute directly to operational efficiency.
Team Development: As the department scales, take ownership of reviewing workpapers, providing constructive feedback, and mentoring junior and senior tax accountants.

2. Client Advisory & Relationship Management

Client-Facing Leadership: Serve as the main point of contact for assigned U.S. tax clients. Confidently lead Zoo ---------- etings to present tax returns, explain impacts (cash, rate, timing), and translate complex tax code into plain-English business decisions.
Proactive Tax Planning: Identify tax-saving opportunities (e.g., Section 199A QBI, R&D credits, Entity structuring, PTE/SALT cap workarounds) and proactively advise clients throughout the year.
Audit & Risk Management: Handle and respond to tax notices, manage federal and state tax audits, and serve as the primary liaison between the client and tax authorities (IRS/Franchise Tax Board).

3. Complex Tax Preparation & Technical Review

Hands-on Execution: Prepare and review complex U.S. federal and state income tax returns for various entities (Forms 1120, 1120-S, 1065, and high-net-worth 1040s).
California State Nuance: Navigate multi-state complexities with a deep knowledge of California compliance (Forms 100, 100S, 568, 565), apportionment, and entity-level taxes.
US GAAP & Reconciliations: Reconcile messy QuickBooks Online files, perform complex book-to-tax Adjusting Journal Entries (AJEs), and ensure pristine, audit-ready workpapers rooted in US GAAP standards.

Tax Software: Drake Tax (Mastery / Power User level required)
Accounting: QuickBooks Online (QBO) & QuickBooks Desktop
Project Management & Comms: Asana, Slack, Google Workspace, Zoom


Non-Negotiable Requirements

Experience: 7+ years of progressive, dedicated experience working directly for or embedded within U.S.-based public accounting firms.
Volume History: A proven track record of high-volume preparation and review (e.g., hundreds of complex business returns and individual returns filed over your career).
Professional Tax Software Mastery: Proven experience navigating and utilizing major U.S. professional tax software autonomously. You must be a power user capable of clearing diagnostics without heavy training.
Tax Code & GAAP Knowledge: Deep, practical knowledge of U.S. federal tax laws, complex California state tax regulations and compliance, and strong foundational knowledge of US GAAP.
Advisory & Communication Skills: Exceptional written and spoken English. You must possess the executive presence required to advise U.S. CEOs and business owners confidently on video calls.
Working Hours & Exclusivity: Strict adherence to 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Pacific Standard Time (PST). This is a dedicated, full-time independent contractor role. You must not hold concurrent jobs, fractional roles, or run a shadow agency.


Preferred/Bonus Qualifications

Credentials & Licensure: An active U.S. Enrolled Agent (EA) credential or U.S. CPA license is strongly preferred. A valid PTIN is highly advantageous.
Drake Tax Power User: While mastery of any major tax software is required, candidates with specific, high-volume experience using Drake Tax will be moved to the very front of the line.
Practice Management Tech: Experience implementing or administering modern CPA practice management software (e.g., TaxDome, Karbon, Canopy, ClickUp) to automate client intake and document collection.
Advanced CA Wealth Strategy: Experience navigating complex California Real Estate taxation (e.g., 1031 Exchanges, Cost Segregation) and High-Net-Worth individual strategies.
IRS Resolution: Proven, hands-on experience representing clients in IRS appeals, drafting audit defense letters, or negotiating Offer in Compromise (OIC) settlements.
