About GavinWood LLC

GavinWood LLC is a custom cabinetry and millwork shop in Kailua, O?ahu, Hawai?i, in business since 1979. We build high-end architectural millwork, custom cabinetry, and one-off CNC-fabricated pieces for residential and commercial clients across Hawai?i.

The Role

We're looking for a Fusion 360 designer to work with us remotely, turning client specs, reference photos, and rough sketches into production-ready parametric models and CNC toolpaths — working directly with our Senior Designer.

This is design and manufacturing prep, not just renders. Every model you build has to actually run on a real 5-axis CNC router (Syntec 610MA-E5) and come out as a finished wood part.

What you'll be doing:

Building parametric Fusion 360 models from client dimensions, reference photos, and drawings — often incomplete or scattered across emails, so you'll need to interpret and ask good questions, not just plug in numbers
Setting up CAM toolpaths (2D contour, pocket/adaptive clearing, multi-pass strategies) for hardwoods, primarily white oak, on a 5-axis router
Working within — and eventually helping extend — an existing parametric toolkit we use for fast, resizable part families
Revising designs based on feedback from real test cuts on the shop floor
First Job (Trial Project)

Your first project will be a real client order: 16 custom oak vent covers for a residential job, across three repeating patterns — a square-perforated grille and two styles of linear slat grilles — plus one irregularly-shaped custom piece. You'll be building:

A parametric model per pattern family, sized to each of the 16 individual pieces
CAM toolpaths following a specific 3-pass strategy per piece: a roughing pass with a bit sized near the hole/slat opening, a small-bit pass to sharpen the corners, and a round-over pass along the top edge
Clean, organized Fusion 360 files we can hand straight to the CNC operator

It's a real job with a real delivery deadline, not a throwaway test — but it's a good, contained first project for us to see how we work together before anything longer-term.

What we're looking for
Solid Fusion 360 experience — parametric/history-based modeling and CAM (toolpaths, tool libraries, post-processing)
Comfortable working from imperfect inputs: reference photos, hand-dimensioned sketches, email threads with corrections buried partway through them
Working knowledge of CNC machining — feeds/speeds, bit selection, what's actually machinable versus what only looks good on screen
Good written English for async coordination with the shop
Reliable and detail-oriented — this work becomes real wood parts on a real client's house

Nice to have:

Experience with architectural millwork, cabinetry, or furniture-grade CNC work
Fusion 360 API/scripting experience (Python)
Experience with multi-axis (4- or 5-axis) CNC routing
