JOB OVERVIEW

SPED Teacher / Reading Specialist for 11-Year-Old with ADHD (Fluent English, Long-Term, Ongoing)

We're a Sydney (Australia) family looking for a patient, skilled online tutor to support our 11-year-old son with reading comprehension, vocabulary and general schoolwork. This is a long-term, ongoing role for the right person.

The ideal profile (this is what we're looking for):
- Licensed SPED (Special Education) teacher — this is our priority
- Reading / literacy intervention experience — comfortable teaching a child who reads below their grade level
- Experience with ADHD children — keeping an easily-distracted child engaged and on track
- Clear, fluent spoken English — essential, as our son has a speech delay and English is his second language (Spanish is spoken at home)

If you don't tick every box but you're a strong SPED teacher or a primary teacher with real reading-intervention experience, we'd still like to hear from you.

About our son:
He is in Year 6 (NSW/Australian curriculum), friendly, hard-working and keen to do well. He has ADHD and a language impairment. His reading comprehension and vocabulary are his biggest challenges and currently sit below his grade level, so we need someone who can teach foundational reading skills while keeping the material age-appropriate for an 11-year-old (he loves Lego, cooking, and sport). He responds beautifully to patience, warmth and praise. We'll provide a short briefing on how he learns best, plus specific strategies from his learning assessment.

What the sessions cover:
- First, support and complete his weekly homework in English, basic science, and religious education (we're a Catholic family, so comfort supporting Catholic religious-education homework is a plus)
- Then the main focus: reading comprehension, making inferences, and vocabulary building — this is his biggest area of need. We'll provide reading books as PDFs.

How he needs to be taught (very important):
- One or two instructions at a time, given both spoken and in writing — he has very limited working memory
- Short blocks with movement breaks — each session runs as two ~15-minute blocks with a short break, not one long stretch
- Lots of visuals — highlighting key words, drawing, colour-coding
- Check understanding by having him explain it back in his own words
- Praise effort, correct gently — he loses confidence quickly

Schedule (40-minute sessions):
- Every weekday: 6:30pm Sydney time (= 4:30pm Manila time)
- Saturday: 3:30pm Sydney time (= 1:30pm Manila time)
- 6 sessions per week. Please confirm you can commit to these times consistently.

Technology required:
- Reliable computer, webcam, and stable internet
- Comfortable sharing/reading PDFs on screen and using video (Zoom or Google Meet)

Also expected:
- A brief weekly written report on what was covered and how his comprehension is progressing

Please answer these in your application (we read the answers carefully):
1. Are you a licensed SPED teacher, or what is your teaching qualification?
2. Have you taught reading comprehension to a child who reads below their grade level? Tell us briefly how you approached it.
3. How do you teach a child to make an inference from a text?
4. What experience do you have with ADHD or language-impaired children?
5. Please confirm you can commit to the schedule above, and include your hourly rate.

We'll shortlist based on your answers and then arrange a short paid trial session before confirming the ongoing role.
