JOB OVERVIEW

Hi, my name is Gavin.
I own a commercial Mechanical Services Design & Construct company in Queensland, Australia, and I’m looking for one exceptional Mechanical Engineer to work directly with me.
I’m looking for one person—not ten. My goal is to find someone who wants to grow with my business for many years.
This is not a Virtual Assistant position.
I’m looking for someone who wants to build a long-term career and become an important part of my business.
We design, estimate, install, commission and maintain commercial HVAC systems for projects including schools, resorts, commercial buildings and industrial facilities throughout Australia.
I don’t expect you to know Australian Standards or how Australian construction projects are delivered. That’s something I can teach you.
What I can’t teach is honesty, curiosity, communication, work ethic and a genuine desire to keep learning.
If you’re simply looking for another online job, this probably isn’t the right opportunity.
If you’re looking for someone who will mentor you, invest in your development and give you increasing responsibility as you grow, I’d love to hear from you.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll work directly with me on the design and delivery of commercial HVAC projects throughout Australia.
Initially your responsibilities will include:
• Mechanical HVAC system design
• Heat load calculations
• Ventilation calculations
• Equipment selection
• Duct sizing and duct design
• Pipe sizing (where applicable)
• Preparing mechanical layouts
• AutoCAD drafting and drawing updates
• HVAC estimating and quantity take-offs
• Reading consultant drawings and specifications
• Reviewing designs for practicality and constructability
• Preparing equipment schedules
• Supplier enquiries and quotation comparisons
• Drafting RFIs
• Maintaining variation registers
• Organising project documentation
• Preparing O&M manuals
• Assisting with project coordination
As your knowledge of Australian Standards and our systems grows, you’ll become involved in the complete design, estimating and management of commercial HVAC projects.
Essential Requirements
• Mechanical Engineering qualification
• Commercial HVAC design experience
• Strong understanding of air conditioning and ventilation system design
• AutoCAD proficiency
• Excellent spoken and written English
• Comfortable discussing technical drawings on Microsoft Teams video calls
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills
• Reliable high-speed internet connection
• Quiet and professional home office
• Willingness to learn Australian Standards and construction practices
Highly Regarded
• HVAC load calculations
• Duct and pipe sizing
• Revit MEP
• Bluebeam Revu
• HVAC estimating experience
• Design & Construct project experience
• Australian, UK, US or New Zealand project experience
The Person I’m Looking For
I’m not looking for someone who simply follows instructions.
I’m looking for someone who:
• Thinks before acting
• Notices when something doesn’t look right
• Asks questions instead of guessing
• Takes pride in producing quality work
• Enjoys learning new skills
• Communicates clearly and professionally
• Wants a long-term career
• Can work independently while also being part of a team
What Success Looks Like
Within six months I’d like you to be confidently assisting with HVAC designs, estimating projects, preparing documentation and helping manage commercial projects.
Within two years I’d like you to be someone I trust to manage significant parts of projects with minimal supervision.
What You’ll Receive
• Direct mentoring from an experienced Australian HVAC contractor
• Exposure to interesting commercial projects
• Long-term career opportunity
• Ongoing training and professional development
• Salary reviews based on performance
• Increasing responsibility as your skills develop
For someone who proves themselves over time, there may be opportunities for greater responsibility and potentially sponsorship to work in Australia in the future. This is not guaranteed, but it is something I would genuinely consider for the right person.
How to Apply
Please send:
1. Your CV.
2. A short 2–3 minute video introducing yourself in English.
3. Answer the following questions:
o Why are you interested in this role?
o What is the largest HVAC project you’ve worked on?
o Which software do you use regularly?
o Tell me about a mistake you made on an HVAC project and what you learned from it.
4. Start your application with the words “Commercial HVAC Engineer” so I know you’ve read the advertisement.
I’m not looking for the person who knows the most.
I’m looking for the person with the best attitude, strong communication skills, good engineering fundamentals and a genuine desire to learn and build a long-term career.
If that sounds like you, I’d genuinely love to hear from you.
