*If you don't have any previous FOIA experience or can’t prove that you’ve had previous FOIA experience do not apply, your application will not be considered*
We are a fast-growing police bodycam YouTube channel with a large and highly engaged audience, and we are looking for a reliable FOIA researcher and requester to join our team.
This role is not simply about knowing how to submit FOIA requests. The most important part of the job is being able to research and identify strong, relevant police cases that are likely to produce useful and engaging bodycam footage.
You will be expected to:
* Search news articles, police press releases, department websites, and police blotters for suitable cases
* Understand which cases are worth requesting and which are unlikely to produce useful footage
* Identify key case details, including the event date, location, suspect name, arrest date, charges, and report or case number
* Determine which police department or agency handled the case
* Use our provided FOIA template to submit accurate public records requests
* Find the correct public records portal or
* Keep all researched cases and submitted requests organized in a Google Sheet
Prior knowledge of FOIA or public records requests is required. Experience requesting police reports or body-worn camera footage is strongly preferred.
Fluent English is absolutely mandatory for this position. Applicants must be able to read and understand detailed English-language news articles, police reports, public records instructions, and written communication from law-enforcement agencies. You must also be able to write clearly and professionally when submitting requests or communicating with police departments. Applications from candidates who are not fluent in English will not be considered.
A short mandatory training period is required before beginning the role. The training will take place over three days and will total approximately four hours.
During the training, we will explain:
* How to find strong and relevant cases
* What makes a case suitable for a bodycam channel
* Which types of cases should be avoided
* How to verify important case details
* How to use our FOIA template
* How to submit requests through public records portals and
* How to organize and track your work correctly
The training is designed to ensure that you fully understand our process before working independently. Applicants should still have a basic understanding of FOIA and public records requests before applying.
Please understand that successfully submitting a request is only one part of the job. Our main focus is finding good cases. Sending a large number of requests is not useful if the cases are irrelevant, unlikely to have bodycam footage, or unsuitable for the channel.
Pay and Performance Bonuses:
The base pay for this position is $5 per hour, and payment is made weekly.
We strongly reward excellent work and place a major focus on quality. When a case you identify results in bodycam footage being obtained and that footage performs well on the channel, you may receive a performance bonus of up to $100 for that individual case.
Tea
A minimum of 250 properly researched and accurately submitted FOIA requests per month is required. However, meeting the minimum number alone is not enough. Every request must be based on a relevant case that has been properly researched and is reasonably likely to produce useful bodycam footage.
This position offers opportunities for both short-term and long-term work. Initial assignments may be offered on a short-term basis, with the possibility of ongoing long-term work for candidates who consistently find strong cases, submit accurate requests, follow instructions, and meet expectations.
We are looking for someone who is:
* Fluent in written and spoken English
* Strong at online research
* Able to identify interesting and relevant police cases
* Detail-oriented and reliable
* Familiar with public records portals
* Able to follow instructions carefully
* Organized and consistent
* Capable of submitting at least 250 quality requests per month
* Willing to complete the required training
* Focused on producing quality work and strong results
Please apply with a brief explanation of your previous FOIA or public records experience. Also explain how you would d
