Schedule: Flexible hours, but consistent availability on publish days (1-2 days per week, US Eastern morning overlap for coordination)
About the work:
I'm the founder of In the Middle, a literary publication on Substack. I built and sold a consumer brand over ten years; now I write essays that I also narrate in my own voice. I do all the writing, editing, and recording. You run everything after that, production and distribution, with exact checklists, plus bring ideas for growing our subscriber base.
Your responsibilities (step-by-step SOPs provided for all of it):
Process my narration audio through Adobe Podcast Enhance and Auphonic (settings documented, no audio expertise needed beyond following the chain)
Publish each essay on Substack: format to template, add header image, set social preview, attach audio for podcast RSS, publish on schedule
Update my personal website with each new piece (image + link)
Create 2 short audiogram videos per piece in CapCut (I provide the clip timestamps, exact caption text, and a strict minimal style guide, no music, no effects, no animations)
Post prepared content to Substack Notes, LinkedIn, and Instagram (Reels, Stories, Highlights). I write all public text, you schedule and post it exactly as written.
Send a simple weekly report: subscriber count, what performed, what converted
Growth: propose ideas to grow subscribers (formats, timing, collabs, repurposing). You propose, I approve, you execute. No engagement pods, no automation, no spam tactics, ever.
Requirements:
Experience publishing on Substack (or very similar: Ghost, Beehiiv, podcast hosting) — tell me exactly what you've run
CapCut or similar video editing (basic level is fine; the style is deliberately simple)
Excellent attention to detail — this job is following checklists perfectly
Good written English for coordinating with me (you will not write public content)
Reliable internet, own computer, consistent long-term availability
Nice to have: experience growing a newsletter, podcast, or creator's audience — I want your ideas, not just your hands.
About me as an employer: I ran a company with a team for a decade. Clear instructions, documented processes, on-time pay, respect for your time, and a long-term seat if you're excellent. I promote from within my own systems — this role grows as the publication grows.
How to apply: (1) Start your message with the word MIDDLE so I know you read this. (2) Tell me about a Substack, newsletter, or podcast you've helped run — what you did, what tools. (3) If you've helped grow an audience, name two tactics that actually worked. (4) Your expected monthly salary for ~10-15 hrs/month.
Shortlisted candidates get a paid trial task: one complete publish-and-distribute cycle on a test piece.
