JOB OVERVIEW

Leather Goods Product Developer & Sample Maker
Remote (Outside the United States) | Illustrator + Hands-On Leather Sample Making
Engagement: Ongoing monthly retainer, with flexibility to structure as per-piece or hourly for a paid trial project

About the Role
We're a small leather goods brand looking for a hands-on product developer to help us design and prototype new styles faster and at lower cost. You'll take rough concepts (sketches, references, or verbal descriptions), your own ideas/thoughts, and turn them into finished physical samples and clean, print-ready pattern files. This is a great fit for someone who genuinely enjoys making things with their hands and also knows their way around Adobe Illustrator.
Your samples and files will be used to produce cutting files for our digital dieless cutting machine (Atom Flash Cut), so precision and clean vector work matter as much as good craftsmanship.
What You'll Do
• Develop new small leather goods styles from a brief, sketch, or reference photo — examples of the product categories we work in: bifold/trifold wallets, card holders, valet trays, keychains/key fobs, sunglass cases, and various other small leather goods.
• Hand-make (or machine-stitch) physical prototype samples in your own home workshop or office space, iterating on fit, proportions, and construction until the design is right.
• Create clean, accurate flat pattern pieces in Adobe Illustrator for every approved sample — correct seam allowances, notches, fold lines, and stitch lines included.
• Package each finished style with a simple written or photographed construction guide (step-by-step assembly instructions) that another maker could follow without you present.
• Recommend leather weights, hardware, and construction methods appropriate for each product type and cost target.
• Communicate clearly and proactively about timelines, material sourcing, and any design trade-offs.
What We'll Provide
• Design briefs, references, and dimensions for each new style.
• Scope and criteria for what makes a successful product.
• Feedback rounds on samples and files before final approval.
• Reimbursement for reasonable material costs on approved development projects (agreed in advance).
What We're Looking For
• Hands-on experience making small leather goods — not just larger bags. Portfolio should show items like wallets, valet trays, keychains, card cases, or sunglass cases.
• Comfortable working with vegetable-tanned or chrome-tanned leather, skiving, edge finishing/burnishing, and hand or machine stitching.
• Working proficiency in Adobe Illustrator — able to build accurate flat patterns and vector line art from a physical sample or sketch.
• Your own dedicated space to work (home workshop, garage, or small studio/office) with basic leathercraft tools already on hand.
• Based outside the United States, with reliable internet access for video calls and file sharing.
• Strong attention to detail — precise measurements matter since your patterns feed directly into automated cutting.
• Good written English for briefs, feedback, and instructions.
• Familiarity with common leather hardware (snaps, rivets, zippers, D-rings).

Nice to Have
• Experience preparing files for laser or dieless cutting systems.
• Prior experience working with overseas/remote brands.
How to Apply
Please include: (1) photos of 3–5 small leather goods you've personally made — wallets, valet trays, keychains, or sunglass cases are examples; (2) a short note on your Illustrator experience and workspace/tool setup; (3) your availability and preferred rate structure (monthly, hourly, or per-piece).
We're looking to start with a small paid trial project (one style, sample-to-pattern-file) before moving to an ongoing monthly arrangement.
