The Opportunity
If you're an experienced tax professional who takes pride in accuracy, organisation, and compliance — this is your opportunity to take ownership of individual and sole trader tax return preparation within our growing accounting division.
You'll manage the end-to-end preparation of individual tax returns and small sole trader tax returns, ensure client files are complete and accurate before lodgement, and maintain compliance with current ATO requirements. You'll work closely with our senior accountants and tax agents, keeping returns moving efficiently through review so the team can focus on advisory and more complex work.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys autonomy, thrives on structure and precision, and is confident managing a high-volume caseload of individual and sole trader returns from intake through to lodgement.
What You'll Do
• Prepare individual income tax returns, including those with rental properties, capital gains, and multiple income sources.
• Prepare tax returns for small sole trader businesses, including business income and expense schedules.
• Review client-supplied documentation for completeness, following up directly with clients on missing or unclear information.
• Reconcile income, deductions, and expense substantiation against supporting records.
• Prepare returns for senior accountant or tax agent review and sign-off, addressing review queries promptly.
• Lodge completed returns and manage related ATO correspondence and follow-ups.
• Maintain accurate, well-organised client files and tax return administration records.
• Communicate directly with clients regarding outstanding information, return status, and queries.
• Identify and implement process improvements to streamline return preparation and administration.
About You
• 3+ years' experience preparing individual and/or sole trader tax returns in an Australian public practice or tax agent environment (essential).
• Sound working knowledge of individual tax matters — deductions, rental properties, capital gains, and sole trader income and expenses.
• Experience with tax preparation software (e.g. Xero Tax, HandiTax, or similar).
• Confident managing a high-volume caseload with strong attention to deadlines.
• Excellent attention to detail and time management skills.
• Professional communication skills and ability to manage client relationships independently.
• Organised, reliable, and proactive in identifying issues before they arise.
