Structural Steel Estimator & Takeoff Specialist (Virtual Assistant) – Full-Time Remote
We are looking for an experienced Structural Steel Estimator & Takeoff Specialist to support our growing steel fabrication and welding business.
This role is responsible for reviewing construction plans, performing quantity takeoffs, preparing project estimates, calculating labor requirements, and assisting with material procurement for commercial structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects.
We're looking for someone with hands-on experience in structural steel, steel fabrication, welding, or steel construction who can accurately interpret technical drawings and deliver precise estimates.
- Review architectural, structural, and shop drawings
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for structural steel and miscellaneous metals
- Calculate material quantities, fabrication requirements, and installation needs
- Prepare project cost estimates including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs
- Analyze project scopes and identify missing information or discrepancies
- Assist with bid preparation and proposal development
- Break down project requirements into actionable work scopes
- Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to obtain pricing and lead times
- Prepare material lists and procurement documentation
- Support material purchasing and ordering processes
- Maintain organized estimate records and project files
- Track estimate revisions and project updates
- Communicate with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders regarding project scope and pricing
- Recommend improvements to estimating accuracy and workflow efficiency
- Proactively identify potential issues and provide solutions
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in structural steel, steel fabrication, welding, or steel construction estimating
- Proven experience performing quantity takeoffs and project estimating
- Strong understanding of structural steel and miscellaneous metals
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and blueprints
- Familiarity with steel terminology, fabrication processes, and industry standards
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Highly Preferred:
- Hands-on welding, fabrication, or steel erection experience
- Knowledge of ANSI standards and structural steel specifications
- Experience with commercial construction projects
- Experience using estimating software and digital takeoff tools
- Experience coordinating material procurement and vendor communications
- Spanish language skills are a plus
