JOB OVERVIEW

Location: Remote
Hours: 8 hours per week to start, with potential to grow
Rate: $4–6 USD per hour based on experience
Start date: Flexible — targeting April ---------- ABOUT THE ROLE

I'm Paula Mason (P.A. Mason), an Australian indie author of military urban fantasy fiction. I'm looking for a reliable, self-directed assistant to help run the business side of my author career. This is not a general admin role — it's a specialised position for someone who understands the indie publishing world, reads fantasy or romance, and can work independently without hand-holding.

The role starts at 8 hours per week with real potential to grow, particularly around book launches. Work is fully remote and async — you choose your hours provided priority tasks are completed on time.

---

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

The task mix shifts week to week depending on where I am in my publishing cycle. Core responsibilities include:

• Audiobook production using ElevenLabs — listening through AI-generated chapters against the manuscript, logging errors with timestamps, making fixes, and organising final files in Google Drive. This is one of the most important parts of the role.

• Platform and database maintenance — keeping book listings accurate and SEO-optimised across Shopify, Goodreads, StoryGraph, ISFDB, YouTube, and other platforms.

• Community engagement — participating authentically in ---------- and Facebook reader communities (r/UrbanFantasy, r/suggestmeabook, enemies-to-lovers groups etc.) as a genuine reader, recommending books where relevant.

• Monthly blog post production — managing a monthly Urban Fantasy book recommendations post on my Shopify website, including Canva graphics, AI-assisted content generation, HTML implementation, and SEO metadata.

• ARC and review management — tracking advance reader copies and reviews ahead of new releases (ramping up later in 2026).

• Market research — finding newsletter swap partners, comp authors, reviewers, and promotional opportunities.

---

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

Essential:
• Experience supporting indie authors — you understand KDP, Kindle Unlimited, and the self-publishing ecosystem
• A genuine reader, ideally in fantasy or romance — you understand reader communities from the inside
• Strong written English — you'll be representing my author brand in online communities
• Self-directed and detail-oriented — I need someone who takes a brief and runs with it
• Comfortable with Google Workspace, Canva, and Meta Business Suite

Highly desirable:
• Experience with ElevenLabs or similar AI audio tools
• Experience with Shopify
• Familiarity with Goodreads, StoryGraph, or book databases
• Understanding of SEO basics

---

WORK STYLE

We operate in two modes depending on my release schedule:

MODE A (Launch weeks): 80-90% of time on audiobook production, Shopify listings, and ARC tracking. Research tasks paused.

MODE B (Maintenance weeks): Focus on community engagement, database updates, blog production, and market research.

All tasks are tracked in a shared Google Sheet. Weekly end-of-week summary required. Primary communication via WhatsApp for quick questions — if you're stuck for more than 10 minutes, just ask.

HOW TO APPLY

IMPORTANT: Applications that do not follow these instructions exactly will not be considered.

1. Subject line must include the word Barney — applications without this word in the subject line will not be opened.

2. Include a short paragraph (5-8 sentences) about your experience supporting authors or working in the book/publishing space. Be specific — tell me what you've actually done, not just what you can do.

3. Attach your CV.

4. Complete this short task (approx. 10 minutes):

Visit these two pages:

— The Elf Captive on Amazon: ----------

— Amazon Top 100 Urban Fantasy: ----------

From the Top 100 list, choose 3 books you believe are the strongest comp titles for The Elf Captive based on genre, tropes, and reader audience overlap. For each book provide:
— The Amazon link
— One sentence explaining why it's a strong match

This task has no single correct answer — I'm looking for your judgment and your ability to identify reader crossover. It should take around 10 minutes.

Successful applicants will be invited to complete a paid 2-hour skills test before any further commitment is discussed. The preferred candidate will be offered a four week trial period upon commencement.

I look forward to hearing from you.
