CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATOR - NO AI
Freelance / Contract · Remote-Friendly · Project-Based
Applications reviewed on a rolling basis
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a talented and imaginative illustrator to bring our children's stories to life. The ideal candidate has a distinct artistic voice that speaks to young readers, paired with the professionalism to meet deadlines and collaborate closely with authors and editors. Whether your style is whimsical and watercolor-soft or bold and graphic, we want to see what makes your work uniquely yours.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Create full-color illustrations for picture books and early chapter books (ages 2–10)
• Develop original characters, environments, and visual storytelling that complement the written narrative
• Produce preliminary sketches and roughs for author/editor review, incorporating feedback at each stage
• Deliver print-ready files in agreed formats (TIFF, PSD, or PDF) at 300 DPI or higher
• Maintain visual consistency across all pages and spreads within a project
• Participate in brief discovery calls to align on story tone, palette, and character design
• Meet project milestones and communicate proactively about timeline changes
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Required:
• A strong, cohesive portfolio demonstrating experience in children's illustration
• Proficiency in digital illustration tools (Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or similar)
• Ability to adapt style or palette to suit different manuscripts while retaining a distinct aesthetic
• Excellent communication skills and ability to incorporate editorial feedback constructively
• Reliable internet connection and access to file-sharing tools (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.)
Nice to Have:
• Prior published children's book credits
• Experience illustrating diverse characters and inclusive narratives
• Familiarity with print production requirements and bleed/trim specifications
• Traditional media skills (watercolor, gouache, pencil) alongside digital workflow
ILLUSTRATION STYLE & ARTISTIC FIT
We welcome illustrators across a wide range of styles — from soft, painterly spreads to flat, graphic, or mixed-media aesthetics. We do not prescribe a "house style." Instead, each project is matched to an illustrator whose existing body of work is the best fit for that story. Your portfolio submission is therefore the most important part of your application.
When reviewing your work, we will consider:
• Expressive, age-appropriate character design
• Clarity of visual narrative and page composition
• Use of color and light to convey mood and emotion
• Consistency and coherence across a body of work
• Originality and freshness of perspective
