JOB OVERVIEW

We’re looking for a Senior Backend PHP Engineer to design and build the scalable backbone of HelloPrint’s e-commerce platforms. You’ll work on APIs, integrations, and core backend services while mentoring peers and elevating engineering standards across the organization.

You will play a key role in shaping our API-first architecture, optimizing system performance, and ensuring our infrastructure scales globally. Beyond implementation, you will influence technical direction and contribute to a high-performance engineering culture.

What You’ll Do
- Architect Our API-First Platform: Design, develop, and maintain a high-performance API layer that powers our headless commerce ecosystem.
- Own Core Backend Services: Take end-to-end ownership of backend components—from system design and development to deployment and monitoring.
- Drive Platform Modernization: Lead the evolution of our legacy systems toward a clean, decoupled, API-first architecture, applying pragmatic engineering decisions over unnecessary complexity.
- Mentor and Elevate: Coach backend engineers on API design, performance optimization, and maintainable code practices.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner with frontend engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to translate business objectives into robust API specifications.
- Champion Engineering Excellence: Advocate for modern development standards, including OpenAPI specifications, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and strong documentation practices.

What We’re Looking For
- Senior-Level Experience: 5+ years of professional backend development experience, with a strong emphasis on PHP.
- API-First Expertise: Proven experience building scalable RESTful or GraphQL APIs and designing headless architectures.
- PHP 8 Proficiency: Deep hands-on experience with modern PHP (PHP 8+), design patterns, and testing methodologies such as TDD. Experience with Symfony or similar frameworks is strongly preferred.
- Strategic & Pragmatic Thinking: Ability to balance refactoring versus rebuilding while navigating large-scale modernization initiatives.
- Strong Ownership Mentality: Proactive in identifying technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and architectural improvements.
- Database Mastery: Extensive experience with relational databases (MySQL/MariaDB), including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning in API-driven environments.
- Agile & Version Control: Experience working with Git and agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
- AI-Accelerated Development: Comfortable leveraging AI tools to enhance productivity, code quality, and development velocity.

Nice to Have
- Experience in e-commerce or high-traffic consumer platforms.
- Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS or GCP) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with asynchronous processing or message queues (e.g., GCP Pub/Sub).
